About 50 human rights organizations from different Arab countries have called in an open letter to Lewis Hamilton to boycott the very first F1 race in Saudi Arabia.
The seven-time F1 champion supports the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and has made it clear that he wants to see more diversity in Formula 1 and the motorsport world. Hamilton has also reiterated in recent days that he will continue to fight against racism and inequality.
The big question, however, is how far that battle can go, because more and more interest groups are asking Hamilton to pay attention to various problems that exist in the various countries that the F1 circus visits.
Saudi Arabia in particular is now in the spotlight. The first ever F1 race in Saudi Arabia is due to take place in early December, but the country has a very dubious reputation for respecting, or rather violating, human rights.
In recent months there has been a lot of criticism that Formula 1 has added Saudi Arabia to the F1 calendar. About 50 human rights organizations have now only asked Lewis Hamilton in an open letter to boycott the Saudi Arabia GP.
“You have shown tremendous courage in the fight you are waging,” said a quote from the letter, according to La Gazetto dello Sport.
“If the best F1 driver refuses to compete in Saudi Arabia, it will be discussed, it would be a great help to convince the country to finally change their stance on respecting human rights.”
“It would show that the world is not blind to Saudi Arabia’s intention to conceal war crimes and human rights violations.”
However, the various NGOs also realize that it is not easy for Lewis Hamilton not to participate in an F1 race. They therefore demand at least a clear signal from the seven-time F1 champion, for example by wearing a sticker on his F1 car or a message on a t-shirt.
