Audi Quattro back on the rally roads… but not quite

Forty years ago, Audi recorded its first victory in the world rally championship, with the now legendary Audi Quattro. That revolutionary rally car – the first with four-wheel drive – is now getting a successor, although it only seems in name.

Stig Blomqvist, Hannu Mikkola, Michèle Mouton: just a few of the rally drivers who achieved their greatest success at the wheel of an Audi Quattro. With its roaring five-cylinder engine, mythical white-yellow decoration and aggressive aerodynamics, the Quattro immediately gained a large following. The car is also immensely popular forty years later, toy manufacturer Lego even launched a block version of the car two years ago.

That popularity has not escaped Mattias Ekström. The former DTM champion, winner of the 24 Hours of

Francorchamps and world champion rallycross of 2016 runs his own team, EKS. After a short brainstorming session, the 42-year-old Swede decided to use the current rally rules to revive the Audi Quattro.

After all, any bodywork can be placed on the basis of a Rally2 kit, built by the French Oreca. Ekström screwed on the body of an Audi A1, of course in a white-yellow color scheme. With its 263 hp, the Audi A1 Rally2 Quattro does not come close to the power of the original Quattro, but the car will still elicit a small smile from the somewhat older rally fan. Although that will probably also be accompanied by nostalgia for the spectacle of forty years ago.
