Sabine Schmitz, the only female race driver to win the 24 hours at the Nürburgring, has passed away at the age of 51. She was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2017.
The German won the prestigious endurance competition in 1996 in a BMW M3 alongside Johannes Scheid and Hans Widmann. A year later she triumphed again with Scheid, Hans-Jurgen Tiemann and Peter Zakowski. It earned her the nickname “Queen of the Nürburgring”.
“We have lost our most famous female racer,” the circuit said in a statement on Wednesday. “Sabine Schmitz left us much too soon after a long illness. We will miss her and her happy nature. Rest in peace Sabine! ”
After her successes at the Nürburgring, Schmitz made a name for herself with her own team Frikadelli Racing, which she founded with husband Klaus Abbelen. She also presented the Top Gear program on the BBC. Co-host Jeremy Clarkson expressed his condolences via Twitter, calling her death “terrible news”.
