Thierry Neuville wins Sanremo Rally

Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe (Hyundai i20) won the Sanremo Rally on Sunday. In the final score, the Belgians have 3.9 ahead of their Estonian teammates Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja. The French Pierre-Yves Loubet and Vincent Landais gave Hyundai the full podium. For Neuville and Wydaeghe it is their second victory together, the first with a WRC.

Even before the rally had even started, Ott Tänak was already falling behind. Just before the start, a problem arose, causing the Est to start a minute late, which cost him ten seconds of penalty time. Tänak did win the first two stages, the third was for Neuville. In turn, Neuville was sentenced to ten seconds after a problem with a tire valve. After the repair, Neuville also started one minute late. In the second round of three stages, Tänak also won two stages and Neuville one. However, Neuville took the lead after he was 6.2 faster than Tänak in the sixth stage.

With a small lead of 2.6, Neuville and Wydaeghe started the 20.48 kilometer long final classification stage. The Belgians were 1.3 faster than Tänak and Järveoja.

The Sanremo Rally is a test race in the run-up to the Rally of Croatia at the end of this month. The five participating WRCs ran on the same track as the drivers in the Italian championship, but only played on Sunday.
