Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has had to give up a substantial salary to Mercedes, according to ‘Race fans’. Hamilton, however, remains the top earner in Formula 1.
It was remarkable how the contract talks between Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes F1 team have dragged on over the past few months. Only a few weeks before the start of the new F1 season there was so-called ‘white smoke’ and the contract extension was a fact.
No, not a new multi-year agreement but only a one-year contract extension. It has already been speculated that Hamilton was not satisfied with the terms of the new contract, including the duration and financial aspects. Now it becomes clear why.
After all, Hamilton would have had to give up no less than $ 10 million. His fixed salary thus fell from $ 40 million to ‘only’ $ 30 million. To be clear, that’s just Hamilton’s base salary without any bonuses or personal sponsorship deals.
Who also had to give up considerably was Sebastian Vettel. The four-time F1 champion made the switch from Ferrari to the Aston Martin F1 team, but the German earns about half of what he earned at Ferrari: 15 million dollars.
With that salary he has to let Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo lead in addition to Lewis Hamilton. Alpine, the former Renault F1 team, clearly felt heavily in the money bag to allow two-time champion Alonso to make his F1 comeback.
