Fernando Alonso: “Cyril Abiteboul’s dismissal was not without reason”

Cyril Abiteboul, former Renault F1 team principal, was one of the driving forces behind Fernando Alonso’s return to Renault, the current Alpine F1 team. The Frenchman was fired quite unexpectedly earlier this year, but according to Alonso it was not just and suddenly without any reason. Was there already clarity about disappointing results?

Even before the new Alpine chapter of the Enstone team could begin, team boss Cyril Abiteboul fell victim to a restructuring in the team’s management and was fired. The Frenchman was one of the driving forces behind the recruitment of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who in turn says he still has full confidence in the team.

“It is true that Cyril was team principal last year and President De Meo changed management a bit,” said Alonso. “You just try to work together with all your bosses as best you can and try to help the team as much as possible.”

“I felt good with Cyril last year, I feel very good with the structure we have this year. So I think if the president made changes, there was a reason behind it and we all support that decision. ”

It is striking to say the least that Abiteboul will not be replaced, the French racing team wants to abandon the idea of a team boss who bears all responsibilities. That means that Marcin Budkowski (Executive Director) and Davide Brivio (Race Director) will take over Abiteboul’s responsibilities.

Despite the fact that the first race weekend was not to write home about, they are not yet panicking at Alpine and let the management know that there is ‘a plan’. What that plan entails and whether it will help to be a serious challenger in midfield will have to tell.
