With the arrival of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, the 4 Series is complete. There is a coupé, a convertible, an M4 variant and there is an electric i4. The latter looks like two drops of water on the 4-series Gran Coupé, but distinguishes itself with a closed grille, blue eco accents (on some versions) and an interior with a gigantic infotainment screen. It is available as a BMW i4 eDrive40 with 340 hp and as an i4 M50 with 544 hp.
When the BMW 4-series Gran Coupé comes on the market in November, the price list will be filled with five versions. The BMW 420i and 430i both have a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, producing 184 and 245 hp respectively. New is the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé (where has the time for short type designations gone?), which sprints to 100 km/h in 4.7 counts with its 374 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. Diesel drivers can choose from the 420d and 420d xDrive, both with 190 hp and 400 Nm.
All versions of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé have an eight-speed automatic transmission. Only the M440i and 420d get a little electrical support in the form of a mild hybrid system. That means the car recovers braking energy, stores it in a small battery and uses it to help the combustion engine with an extra 11 horsepower during acceleration. It should provide a small fuel saving and certainly provide an extra push when driving off.
The interior of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé corresponds to that of the 4 Series Coupé and Convertible. So you search in vain for the oversized screen of the BMW i4. As a driver you just have a digital cockpit in front of you and a modest infotainment display above the center console. The luggage compartment can carry 470 – 1290 liters. And that is surprisingly slightly less than before, when there was still room for 480 – 1300 litres.
