Toyota is right! Electric cars are far from taking over the world

Toyota board member Shigeki Terashi spoke to investors this week and said electric cars will continue to compete with hybrids and hydrogen cars for the next 30 years. Toyota therefore does not follow manufacturers such as Jaguar and Volvo, who want to be completely electric in ten years.

It’s too early to switch to electric cars

According to Terashi, Toyota is working hard on a series of electric cars (a few years ago Toyota didn’t even want that), but it is much too early to abandon the hybrid and the hydrogen car. And that is a realistic assessment of the situation, because in Europe we sometimes forget that the rest of the world is not ready for electric cars yet.

Toyota is of course also trying to save its own skin

But partly Terashi’s comment is of course also intended to serve Toyota’s self-interest. The Japanese group is the pioneer when it comes to hybrids and has invested heavily in hydrogen technology – even though the market does not favor cars with fuel cells.

Yet there are fifteen electric Toyotas on the market

A few years ago, Toyota announced that it would not start with an electric powertrain, but a few months ago the company put an ambitious plan on the table. Within now and 2025, fifteen electric Toyotas should be on the market. Lexus currently supplies an electric UX. Toyota will soon release the production version of the Toyota bZ4X.
