The organizers of the Australian GP have announced that the race will not take place this year. The race was previously postponed from March to November.
Normally the Australian GP is the first race on the F1 calendar, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the opening race in Melbourne was postponed to autumn. The organizers also made good use of the postponement to adapt the street circuit and carry out improvement works.
However, the global coronavirus pandemic continues to cause flare-ups of infections, which in turn lead to additional measures. For example, it was recently decided that the entry restrictions to Australia will be tightened.
This makes it logistically almost impossible for the F1 teams to get in and out of Australia smoothly. A cancellation of the Australian GP is therefore the only option. So no F1 race on the renewed Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne, although Formula 1 still hopes to have an F1 calendar with 23 races this year.
That will not be easy because it was previously announced that Singapore will also be dropped and, among other things, the race in Japan is also hotly debated. Formula 1 will therefore have to look for replacements. Organizing two races in a row on some circuits, such as in Austria, is also an option.
