However, on the first fast run in Q3, Mercedes caused a big surprise as Valtteri Bottas set a super fast time of 1:15,875, followed by a second fastest time for Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez had to settle for only the third and fourth fastest time.

Verstappen was even more than three tenths slower than Bottas. However, an ultimate second run followed, did Red Bull and Verstappen still manage to hit back and take pole?

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez went full steam ahead in their second fast run but the Mexican went off track, also affecting and ruining Max Verstappen’s second fast run.

It was still tense between the two Mercedes drivers, but in the end it was Valtteri Bottas who took pole position. Lewis Hamilton qualified second to a handful of thousandths of Bottas, Max Verstappen had to be satisfied with third.

Mercedes thus provided a major surprise and dealt a huge psychological blow to Red Bull, the harbinger of undoubtedly a very exciting race.
