The global chip shortage has a major impact on the automotive industry. Almost all automakers have temporarily scaled back or shut down production this year. Also, brands are forced to supply their cars without certain options, simply because there are not enough chips for them.
BMW has decided in Europe to supply the 3-series, 4-series and Z4 without a touchscreen for a few weeks. This means that buyers who agree to this cannot operate the iDrive infotainment system via the screen, but can operate the iDrive rotary knob on the center tunnel. BMW gives them a discount of 500 euros as compensation.
In the United States, the measure does not only apply to the 3-series, 4-series and Z4, but also to the X5, X6 and X7. There, buyers receive a discount of 500 dollars on the new price of their car, which is converted slightly more than 430 euros. In Europe, the X5, X6 and X7 will keep their touchscreen.
