Mercedes will continue in 2022 with Nyck De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne in Formula E: “Never change a winning team”
Stoffel Vandoorne and the Dutchman Nyck de Vries will also be the pilots of Mercedes in 2022 in the Formula E championship. The German team confirmed this at the team presentation on Sunday. “Never change a winning team”, it sounded.
The 29-year-old Vandoorne and the 26-year-old De Vries are already the driver duo of Mercedes for the third year in a row. Last season they gave the German brand the constructors’ title. De Vries also became individual world champion, Vandoorne finished in ninth place.
“Continuity is important in Formula E,” says Vandoorne. “The difference between the drivers and the teams is so small that a good relationship with the whole crew becomes very important. You really have to understand each other, be able to make clear what you need from the car in order to improve and achieve performance. We often discuss new ideas, explore with the whole team whether they are worth the effort or whether we could better spend our time doing something else. Together we are constantly trying to improve our lap times.”

“Stability and continuity certainly play a major role,” team principal Ian James agrees. “Don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Nyck and Stoffel both play a crucial role in this. They’ve already done a great job as drivers for our team, which we built with them from scratch. Our drivers have made a fantastic contribution to this. The fact that we can continue with them is therefore a huge advantage.”
The Formula E season will kick off on the weekend of January 28 and 29 with a double ePrix in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.
