34 years ago, world champion André Malherbe became paralyzed during the Dakar rally at his peak as a motocross racer

That it just had to happen to him: a top-class athlete, a man brimming with energy and plans, a three-time motocross world champion. On January 6, 1988, thirty-four years ago today, 31-year-old André Malherbe crashed his motorcycle during the Dakar rally. Since that fatal moment, paralyzed from the neck down, he can only move his head. “And yet I enjoy every day.”
