Dissatisfied Thierry Neuville to fourth place in Rally of Monte Carlo: “Never driven with so much fear”

On the first full day of the Monte Carlo Rally, Thierry Neuville advanced from sixth to fourth place. However, the East Cantonner is anything but satisfied with his new Hyundai.

“I’ve never ridden with such fear before,” said Neuville after the first Friday stage. Neuville stated that the handling of the new hybrid-Hyundai did not inspire confidence. “I just can’t attack,” he added.

As the day went on, the five-time vice world champion was able to adjust his metal steed little by little, resulting in a second fastest time in the final stage of the day. Good for fourth place in the standings. “I don’t think we can improve the car much more this weekend,” he said resignedly. “Now it’s just trying to stay clear and get to the finish.”

With nine classification stages and 160 kilometers to go against the clock, Neuville is just under 48 seconds behind leader Sébastien Loeb (Ford). The nine-time world champion, who will only complete the Monte Carlo this season, set four of the six fastest times on Friday. Loeb is 9.9 seconds ahead of fellow countryman Ogier. (gf)
