Help, storm Dudley or Eunice blow a tree on your car. Who’s going to pay for that?

What to do if a tree, heavy branch or roof tile falls on your car, resulting in significant damage? First take some clear pictures of the damage and the situation. If necessary, call the fire brigade or other emergency services to clear the tree. And suppose your car has been badly damaged, can you claim the damage from the insurance?

Only third-party insurance?

If your car alone WA is insured, the answer is in almost all cases: ‘no’. With third-party liability insurance, damage to your own car is in principle never covered, even if you cannot do anything about it yourself. After all, this compulsory insurance only reimburses damage that you cause to third parties with your car. If the tree in question was demonstrably poorly maintained, diseased and/or unstable, and should have already been pruned or cleared preventively, you could invoke your legal expenses insurance. If you have it. This could hold the owner or manager of the tree liable. However, this only works in exceptional cases. If in doubt, contact your insurer.

Storm damage and third-party liability plus

If your car is insured according to WA limited hull, also often referred to as ‘WA plus’, almost all storm damage will be reimbursed. Less the deductible, of course. Does your car need to be towed? Then call the emergency center of your insurer. He usually also arranges for the tree to be cleared.

Paying for damage yourself can be wise

Is your car all risk, or fully hull insured? Then there is little to worry about; the insurance will reimburse the damage, but again: with deduction of the deductible. If the damage is not too bad, or if you have a very high deductible, it may be wise to take care of the damage yourself. If you have the damage reimbursed by the insurance, this can have consequences for your place on the bonus/malus ladder and/or your no-claim discount. That becomes a matter of calculation. Your insurer can advise you on this.
