More than half of the petrol price is tax: 17 percent VAT and more than 40 percent excise duty. A logical option to lower the petrol price would therefore be to (temporarily) lower the excise duty, but the cabinet does not want that. According to Minister Kaag of Finance, this will lead to a deficit in the treasury, which means that cuts will have to be made in other areas. She only seems to forget that the government is currently receiving much more money in VAT and excise duties due to the sky-high fuel prices.
Anyway, according to Kaag, the cabinet will come up with concrete plans in the coming weeks. “It won’t be long,” she said. Last Friday GroenLinks asked for the introduction of the Emergency Prices Act, which could temporarily freeze prices. Minister Kaag said to WNL on Sunday that he was very concerned about inflation. “It affects a lot of people.” According to her, the consequences of the war in Ukraine will continue for a while. “We pay a price for this.”
