The Frenchman completed a lap in 1:34.276 on the circuit in Sakhir and was nine hundredths faster than the Monegask Charles Leclerc (Ferrari). The Dutch world champion Max Verstappen clocked the third time in his Red Bull at more than 1.5 seconds. On Thursday, Verstappen had not taken action on the first day.

The morning session had to be stopped three times. First because Nicholas Latifi’s Williams caught fire, later Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) fell silent on the track. It all led to a red flag and session interruption.
