“It’s been such a tough year with everything that’s happening around us,” said the Brit. “For a long time I had a hard time mentally and emotionally. It is an ongoing effort to persevere. We have so much to do and achieve.”
“I’m writing to tell you that it’s okay to feel the way you feel,” Hamilton told his fans. “Just know that you are not alone and that we are going to get through this.”
Hamilton grabbed last season in extremis next to an eighth world title in Formula 1, with which he alone would become the record holder. In the final lap of the last Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi, he was overtaken by Max Verstappen, who was helped by the intervention of the safety car and race director Michael Masi. Verstappen thus took his first world title. Since that GP and until February, Hamilton shunned social media. That sparked speculation about his future. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton was “disillusioned”. Still, Hamilton started his 16th season.
The Briton has had a difficult start to the season, partly due to a disappointing Mercedes car. Last weekend he finished only tenth in the GP of Saudi Arabia.
Hamilton is the only black driver in Formula 1 and an outspoken champion of equal opportunity and diversity.
