The Volkswagen T-Cross measures 4.10 meters from bumper to bumper. That is exactly 3 centimeters more than the Volkswagen Polo. The fact that a T-Cross looks a lot bigger and also offers its occupants more freedom of movement is due to its 13 centimeters greater height.
The T-Cross also performs well compared to its direct opponents in this test. And not just because of the cubic centimeters available. Its rear seat that can be moved in parts is also a plus. With the rear seats in the passenger position, it offers a luggage space of 455 liters.
If you regularly travel with four people and accompanying luggage, the T-Cross is a great companion. For fully-packed trips to the municipal yard or from the blue-yellow furniture giant home, you have 1281 liters of cargo space. If necessary, you can also flatten the backrest of the front passenger seat. When we take a seat in the back, it is striking how deep the footwell is. It reminds us of the old Audi A2. You could also sit up straight in it.
The Renault Captur measures 4.23 meters in length and 1.80 meters in width, making it the largest of the quartet. You wouldn’t say that on the inside. Renault has provided the door panels with a thick layer of upholstery material and the optional ‘floating’ center console with the fancy selector lever also takes up a lot of space. If you’re a little over-the-top, it’s bound to be knee-jerk sex – whether you like it or not.
We have no complaints about the storage space for loose items of the Renault Captur. Still, it is quite remarkable that the large Captur offers little or no more freedom of movement than the compact Kia Stonic. Nevertheless, we are not wildly enthusiastic about the Korean interior.

The Kia is tightly put together, but just like in the Volkswagen, hard plastics do have the upper hand. In the Renault and the Audi, more love – and money – has clearly been put into the finish. Unlike with the Renault, the nicer upholstery materials on the Audi are not at the expense of space. In addition, the Q2 scores points with its high towing weight; he is allowed to tow a braked trailer of 1500 kilos. That’s seriously a lot in this class.
Also seriously a lot is the number of euros that you have to pay for an Audi Q2 35 TFSI S tronic (150 hp): it starts at 41,106 euros. The Kia Stonic 1.0 T-GDI with automatic transmission is the other extreme. You have it from 27,095 euros. With a starting price of 32,800 euros, the Renault Captur TCe 140 EDC Intense (140 hp) is a golden mean. The Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0 TSI DSG-7 Life (110 hp) is close with 32,590.
