You can’t sit in the back in the electric Mercedes EQS, so there is now the EQS SUV

The EQS SUV is a typical electric Mercedes, with many styling cues from the Mercedes EQE and EQS. In fact, Mercedes designs its plug models in such a way that they can hardly be distinguished from each other. Anyway, that was already the case with the ‘normal’ cars of the brand. You have to put the Mercedes EQS SUV next to an EQC to see the difference, because that is mainly in the dimensions. The latest electro-suv from Stuttgart is no less than 5.13 meters long and almost 2 meters wide. Its wheelbase is the same as that of the sedan EQS (1.96 meters), only the EQS SUV is more than 20 centimeters higher (1.72 meters).

A somewhat clumsy name: Mercedes EQS SUV

And yes, that name is a bit clumsy. It is clear that Mercedes has not thought carefully about the type designations of its electric model range. The first Mercedes with an electric drive was the EQC: not a C-class with a plug, but an SUV the size of the GLC. And the following EQA and EQB are also SUVs, but do not get the SUV addition. We therefore assume that the naming convention will be equalized in due course. The solution is not elegant (put the letters SUV everywhere), but that’s how Mercedes will do it.

Up to 2200 liters of luggage space in the EQS

Anyway, back to the EQS SUV, which offers more headroom in the back than the EQS. Optionally, you can even opt for a third row of seats, bringing the total number of seats to seven. In standard configuration (with two rows of seats), a maximum of 880 – 2200 liters of luggage fit in the trunk. If you opt for the third row of seats and also use it, you can only lose 195 liters. The interior of the EQS SUV is also largely the same as that of the EQS, with optional the huge Hyperscreen, which consists of three screens under one glass plate.

EQS SUV 450+ with 170 kilometers less range

The powertrain of the Mercedes EQS SUV – which will be launched in the Netherlands this year – corresponds to that of the EQS. This means that the delivery program starts with the EQS 450+ (rear-wheel drive, 360 hp, 568 Nm) and 580 4Matic (4WD, 544 hp, 858 Nm). Both can fast charge with 200 kW, but range figures are not yet available. According to Mercedes, the EQS 450+ will go more than 600 kilometers on its 107.8 kWh battery. That is remarkably ‘little’, because the regular EQS is on paper no less than 770 kilometers away. So you can see what an SUV shape does to the air resistance and thus the range.
