FIA wants to check more strictly for piercings and jewelry from this weekend, Lewis Hamilton wears as many as he can at press conference
Lewis Hamilton does not rule out being banned from participating in the Miami Grand Prix in Formula 1 next Sunday. Race organizer FIA wants to check more strictly from this weekend whether the already in force ban on the wearing of jewelry and piercings for safety reasons during competitions are adequately observed. However, according to Hamilton, he cannot remove some of his piercings.
To emphasize his views, at the pre-race press conference, the seven-time world champion wore a ring on each finger, many pieces of jewelry and, among other things, three watches. He did say he was willing to sign a statement stating that he is responsible for wearing certain things during matches.
“I can’t wear more jewelry than I wear now,” said the Brit. “But I wonder what we’re worried about. I think there are bigger issues in sport that require strict measures. This isn’t about anything at all. I have two piercings that I really can’t remove. And I really can’t tell where one is. I’ve had them for a long time and it’s never been a safety issue. Not even in the hospital, if I had to have another MRI scan.”
