Is the updated Mazda MX-30 (2022) just as good at fast charging as the Kia EV6?

The Mazda MX-30 has been updated for 2022. The main upgrade for the new model year is a higher payload. Yet the electric Mazda remains the scum of the fast-charging class.

Mazda has updated the MX-30. It is not a major facelift, but a simple refresh for a new model year. The maximum payload has been increased from 40 to 50 kW. The small battery doesn’t get bigger.

Fast charging with the Mazda MX-30 (2022)

Faster charging is a welcome addition, but at the same time 50 kW is the absolute minimum you can expect from a modern electric car. Even the MG5 Electric – MG’s budget electric station wagon – charges with 87 kW. The Volkswagen ID.3 does 125 kW and the Kia EV6 fills its battery pack with more than 200 kW. So no: the updated Mazda MX-30 is not as good at fast charging as the Kia EV6.

Little consolation: the battery of the MX-30 is small, so you only have to wait 26 minutes. When we tested the range of the Mazda MX-30, we managed to squeeze 30 kWh from the battery pack. Enough to cover 171 highway miles.

What else is new about the Mazda MX-30 (2022)?

The updated MX-30 now supports 3-phase charging (11 kW) and Mazda says it sounds better. The sound you hear would better match the amount of torque that appeals to you. I’m curious what you notice, because in my memory the MX-30 has a remarkably quiet cabin.

When putting together the car, you can now also opt for black upholstery with white and gray accents. There are new paint colors and there is a bike carrier hook on the order list. You can enjoy a nice bike ride when the car is charging.

Mazda will announce the prices next month. The renewed MX-30 will be at the dealer in September.
