BMW M once stood for excellent engine technology, refined steering precision and excellent chassis balance. The BMW M3 E30 and E46, the BMW M5 E39 and the BMW M Roadster are legendary and are still admired today. But BMW M has let itself go and at fifty is only a fat, heavy shadow of itself. Just look at this new 650 hp monster SUV: the BMW XM.
“BMW M will continue to break with conventions and push boundaries,” said BMW M director Frank van Meel. And that is not a lie, because the BMW XM is almost the on-M’se model ever: a heavy performance SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. The XM has a newly developed V8 on board, which is coupled to an electric motor. The system power is 650 hp and 800 Nm of torque is available. According to BMW, the XM can go about 80 kilometers on battery power alone.
Typical M features are the differential lock on the rear axle and the almost perfect weight distribution of just under 50 percent at the front and 50 percent at the rear. The XM is also equipped with active dampers and electromechanical roll stabilization. In simple terms, this means that the car pushes itself up on one side when cornering to counteract the rolling of the body. Standard is BMW’s Integral Active Steering, or a co-steering and counter-steering rear axle. Such a gigantic SUV naturally comes with gigantic wheels. The option list includes up to 23 inches of light metal.
Production of the BMW XM will begin at the end of this year in Spartanburg, United States. The exact design of the car is still a mystery, but the Concept XM from 2021 gives you a good idea. We are not a fan of BMW’s current design direction. And it seems that the XM – a model that will stand above the BMW X7 – will be the ultimate expression of it. The Concept XM has a nose like a battering ram, two devilish ‘horns’ at the top of the rear window and exhausts like the barrels of a gunboat.
