Still hope for the combustion engine in the EU

We recently wrote that the European Parliament had approved plans to ban the sale of cars with an internal combustion engine from 2035. With that we were ahead of the troops, because there is still a glimmer of hope for cars on petrol, diesel or gas.

It is not the entire European Parliament that has agreed to the proposal, but the 88-member ENVI committee (environmental management, public health and food safety). And then also by an extremely narrow majority of two votes, we learned from a source at the European offices. More steps have to be taken to make the ban on the combustion engine official in 2035.

“Combustion engine ban 2035 by no means certain”

For example, the plenary of the European Parliament must first have its say on the proposals. That will happen in June 2022. According to our source, who prefers to remain anonymous, it is by no means certain that the ban on new cars with combustion engines will come, as it is now formulated. On the one hand, because the right-wing parties in particular have quite a bit of criticism. There could therefore still be some tinkering with the way in which the proposal is currently formulated.

But even if the majority of the European Parliament agrees to a sales freeze by 2035, it is not yet over and over. “If that were to happen, the council and member states still have to reach an agreement. Only if that happens can the combustion engine possibly be abolished in 2035,” said our anonymous source.
