Elon Musk is a fan of modern slavery and calls American Tesla staff lazy

You must have a boss like that… One who is the richest man in the world, but doesn’t let his employees form unions and even fire them if they bring out something about the bad working conditions at Tesla. Not surprisingly, Elon Musk criticizes his American workers as lazy and expresses his appreciation for his employees in China, who are treated almost like modern slaves.

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory is also called the Giga-Sweatshop, because of the poor working conditions and the bizarre amount of overtime that the staff has to work. But Tesla boss Elon Musk obviously don’t see the problem† He praises his Chinese staff. “There are so many super-talented, hard-working people in China, with a strong belief in the manufacturing process. They not only work until midnight, but even until 3 a.m. and don’t even leave the factory after that. Compare that to Americans, who always trying to get out of their work.”

Elon Musk is a fan of the Chinese 996 work culture

Shanghai is facing strict lockdowns due to a corona outbreak. Tesla production workers have to sleep on the factory floor to form a bubble against corona. They have to meet strict production targets, so they work 12 hours a day, six days a week. Do they get paid for all that overtime? No of course not. And according to Chinese law, that much overtime is not even allowed. However, this is not enforced in the country. The Chinese 996 work culture is notorious: working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. Modern slavery, as human rights organizations call it.

Chinese employees not entitled to paid overtime

Chinese employees often have to sign a statement when they are hired by a company, waiving the right to paid overtime and paid time off. Many large Chinese companies have unions, but they are paid by the employer, so they have no bargaining power against management decisions. American Factory – a great Netflix documentary from 2019 – shows that the union of the Chinese glass manufacturer Fuyao Group is led by the brother-in-law of the CEO.
