Tormenting rain holds up Formula 1: Monaco GP start postponed twice

Before the start of the GP in Monaco, the heavens opened, which caused some famous chaos. The start was postponed and the organization obliged all teams to start on the ‘extreme wet tires’. The safety car guided the cars through the formation lap, but a red flag soon followed as the rain continued. Resulting in a second delay. It is not yet clear when the race will actually start.

The cars were on the grid when the decision was made by race officials. The Monegasque and home driver Charles Leclerc, second in the championship, is on pole for his teammate, the Spaniard Carlos Sainz, and the two Red Bulls of the Mexican Sergio Pérez and the Dutchman Max Verstappen, leader in the world championship.

After a fifteen minute delay, two warm-up laps were driven behind the safety car, but it rained so hard that the race management quickly decided to hang out the red flag. All drivers went back into the pits and got out of their cars. They have to wait in the pit boxes of their teams until it starts to rain less heavily.

Verstappen was initially not happy with the postponement. The Dutchman, who had not progressed further than fourth place in qualifying, was hoping for rain. “What are they waiting for then? Until the weather turns dry?” he said to his team from the starting grid over the on-board radio. Verstappen thinks he has a better chance of winning in Monaco in such circumstances, where overtaking is normally next to impossible.
