huh?! New Cupra Terramar just has an internal combustion engine

Cupra is to become the electric brand of the Volkswagen Group. But not yet, apparently. Because the Cupra Terramar (the gray SUV at the top) is still equipped with an old-fashioned fuel engine. Is there no plug at all on the sports SUV? Yes, because it is also available as a plug-in hybrid.

Cupra was invented by marketers. It was once the sports label of Seat, but had to be spun off as an independent brand in 2018 if necessary. There was a logo – a sort of tribal tattoo – and a brand identity that you only understand if you wear purple pants every day: “Disruptive Attitude, Rebellious Spirit and Unconventional Mindset† Because nothing is as unconventional and rebellious as a Volkswagen ID.3 with a different nose. However?

Cupra has the future, Seat unfortunately does not

Well, we clearly do not belong to the Cupra Tribe, as the Spanish brand keeps calling its enthusiasts and ambassadors (itching!). But we still find the developments at the Spanish brand interesting. All the more so because Cupra seems to be taking over the role from Seat. By this we mean that Seat is no longer the priority within the Volkswagen Group. Cupra has the future, CEO Wayne Griffiths said early this year. And not Seat.

Cupra Terramar with combustion engine (and plug)

Cupra will be electric, but apparently not quite yet. The new Cupra Terramar is an example of this. The suv comes on the market with a good old combustion engine, but also as a plug-in hybrid with a fully electric range of up to 100 kilometers. With its length of 4.5 meters, the Terramar falls between the Seat Ateca and Tarraco. The model is on the agenda for 2024.

Electric Cupra Tavascan basically a VW ID.5

Just like the Cupra Tavascan, the electric coupé SUV that debuted as a concept car three years ago. The car is basically an Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron or Volkswagen ID.5 and is therefore on the MEB platform. The study model had two EV motors, an output of 306 hp and a 77 kWh battery, which would be good for a range of 450 kilometers. According to Cupra – which wants to become a global brand – the Tavascan is the car with which it will tap into new markets.
