Qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP started with a 15-minute delay because the last practice session had to be postponed earlier due to work on the Tecpro barriers. At the start of Q1 there was a queue at the exit of the pitlane.

After all, everyone wanted to get onto the Baku street circuit as quickly as possible to set a fast lap time. In recent years, sessions were often interrupted by a crash and that turned out to be the case this time too. Lance Stroll crashed after all with his Aston Martin F1 car.

As a result, we had a nervous last two and a half minutes in which the cars mainly got in each other’s way. However, all the toppers managed to push through to Q2 without any problems. At the start of Q2 we seemed to get a repeat of the start of Q1: a train with cars at the exit of the pitlane.

In Q2 we saw a lot of riders going up and over the limit. Sebastian Vettel went straight ahead and hit the Tecpro barriers head-on.

A little later, Charles Leclerc literally looked up the wall with his Ferrari, an example that Max Verstappen also followed a little later in another corner.

In the end Sergio Perez was fastest but the Mexican was only a handful of thousandths faster than Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. Red Bull and Ferrari evenly matched, that promised for Q3 and the battle for pole.

In Q3 both Ferraris and Red Bull went full steam ahead. In the end it was Carlos Sainz who set the provisional best time, ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc who was only 0.047 seconds slower. Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen followed just over a tenth of a second.

However, a second ultimate run followed in which we saw Carlos Sainz take the track as the first of the toppers. However, the Spaniard did not improve his lap, something Charles Leclerc did. The Monegask rode an incredibly fast lap and was almost half a second faster than Sainz.

Pole position for Charles Leclerc, his fourth pole position in a row but none of Leclerc’s previous pole positions turned into a win during the race. Sergio Perez eventually drove into second, ahead of Max Verstappen, who had to be satisfied with third.
