Within the Volkswagen Group, Seat is the only manufacturer without electric cars (if we ignore Lamborghini for a moment). That fuels speculation about the future of the brand, which has fallen somewhat in the shadow of Cupra. But what is the reason that Seat has no electric cars? R&D boss Werner Tietz has a very weak excuse for it.
“For now, electrification is still a bit too expensive,” Tietz told Britain’s Autocar† “We are now concentrating on the electrification of Cupra. If the prices of parts go down – batteries and electric motors – then we can talk about Seat.” huh?! What?! Electrification is too expensive for Seat, but not for Skoda and Volkswagen? It looks suspiciously like Tietz is making excuses here. All EVs of the Volkswagen Group are subcutaneously the same: the Audi Q4 E-Tron, Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4, for example. Then it is really not the case that the batteries and electric motors are too expensive specifically for Seat.
Development boss Tietz seems to try to soothe the rumors around Seat a bit with his statements, but as we see it, his wonderful answer has the opposite effect. Seat has not introduced a completely new car since 2020. And nothing will come of it in the near future. The focus within the Volkswagen Group now seems to be mainly on Cupra, which has had the electric Cupra Born since last year and unveiled no fewer than two new EVs and a plug-in hybrid SUV last week.
