How is it possible that the section control on the A2 handed out 511,630 fines last year?

The section control on the A2 between Utrecht and Amsterdam has been in place for years. So how is it possible that more than 500,000 fines were handed out to speed drivers on that route last year? You would think that motorists would know by now that they should hold back on that stretch.

Last year, almost 6.7 million speeding fines were issued in the Netherlands. By far the most violations (511,630) were committed in the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, through which the A2 motorway runs. In both directions, motorists there have been dealing with speed control for years, so you would think that almost everyone would know that you should take it easy. Apparently not.

A quarter of all speeding fines in five municipalities

The municipality of Stichtse Vecht is therefore in first place, followed by the municipalities of Rotterdam (376,632 fines), Haarlemmermeer (327,632), Utrecht (318,020) and Amsterdam (220,028). On average, the motorists, motorcyclists, truck drivers and scooter drivers who were caught drove 8 km/h too fast. The biggest speed demons can be found in Flevoland, where the average speed limit is 9.7 km/h.

Average speed violation of 22.7 km/h?!

At municipal level, comparison site Independer, which delved into the database of the Central Judicial Collection Agency, found a number of surprising outliers. For example, the average speed limit in Koggenland (North Holland, between Heerhugowaard and Hoorn) is no less than 22.7 km/h. If you drive more than 30 km/h too fast (40 km/h too fast on the highway) you will receive a so-called penalty order. In 2021, about 48,000 people received one. And that results in a criminal record.
