Lexus admits ‘customers don’t find huge ‘spindle grille’ to peep at’

If there’s one thing that sparks debate in the automotive world, it’s grille design. Audi’s single-frame grille has caused controversy in the past, BMW’s ever-expanding ‘kidneys’ still do, and Lexus has also been criticized for its design style. The spindle grille – which always reminds us of the open mouth of a Predator – may bring the Japanese premium brand new customers, but also scare buyers away. Lexus now admits that.

We are not going to repeat Akio Toyoda’s well-known quote, because we are thrown to death in Toyota press releases and during press releases. The boss of the Toyota group said something like: ‘no more gray stuff’. And that’s why Lexus introduced the spindle grille in 2011, first in a rather subtle form on the compact CT, later as a wide-open Predator beak. The brand’s design language has undergone a major overhaul, from as anonymous as an AA alcoholic to as loud as the same alcoholic at a drinking party.

Lexus grille is toned down, because customers don’t like it

A little too loud, Lexus now admits. Opposite Automotive News

design director Koichi Suga says the spindle grille will gradually change, based in part on customer feedback. Market research shows that consumers find the big mouth a turn-off. The first hints of Lexus’ new direction are seen on the recently unveiled Lexus RX. The spindle shape can still be seen on it, but then considerably toned down. The all-electric Lexus RZ doesn’t even have a grille at all, just an hourglass-like plastic surface, which Lexus calls the “spindle body.”
