McLaren really said it years ago: the English brand from Woking would only build supercars and hypercars. an SUV? The suggestion alone made McLaren headquarters tremble with indignation. But yes, the ailing manufacturer can do something pound sterlings to use. So there will be a competitor for the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus.
McLaren is very late with it. Other top manufacturers have been reaping spectacular success with their SUV models for some time: the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Even Ferrari has given up and will come this year with a suv-like: the Purosangue.
Things have not been going well at McLaren for a while. In corona time, it made little difference whether the manufacturer had been bankrupt. So in Woking they look with envy at the money sloshing against the baseboards of the competitors. Because pricey SUVs are a huge hit and have driven up the sales volumes of Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce.
So McLaren will also come up with an ‘offroader’ in the second half of this decade. A fully electric one even, with two or three electric motors and four-wheel drive. In terms of performance, it will be comparable to the Aston Martin DBX707, the fastest SUV in the world, which flies to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and only stops accelerating at 310 km/h.
It is striking that McLaren recently hired a new CEO: Michael Leiters. The German worked for years at Porsche, where he oversaw the development of the Cayenne and Macan. In 2014 he went to Ferrari, which at that time started with the Purosangue. Chance? Probably not.
