Without taking into account the costs, you know what we would most like to drive: a top diesel. There is nothing as nice as a torque-rich executioner, who drags you through Europe nicely economically and at high speed. But unfortunately, in the Netherlands you are almost a cow if you stunt with diesel, because the sky-high tax and sharply increased diesel price throw a spanner in the works. So apologies, Alpina. We will probably buy few copies of the new D4 S Gran Coupé here.
Perhaps this is the last top diesel from Alpina. For now, BMW still supplies diesel variants of most models, but that will undoubtedly come to an end in a few years. However, this Alpina D4 S Gran Coupé is still based on the BMW M440d xDrive Coupé. At least, technically. Because strangely enough, BMW does not supply an M440d variant of the 4-series Gran Coupé. Of the 4-series Coupe.
Behind the now well-known hare teeth, lies a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel with 355 hp and 730 Nm. This makes the Alpina 15 hp and 30 Nm more powerful than the M440d. Due to the higher weight of the four-door body, the D4 S Gran Coupé is a little later at 100 km/h: after 4.8 seconds instead of 4.6 seconds. However, the BMW stops accelerating at 250 km/h. Then the Alpina can continue to 270 km/h.
Due to BMW’s monster grille, the new Alpina is not as subtly styled as you are used to from the German tuner / manufacturer. Typical Alpina features are the 20-spoke alloy wheels, the branded front spoiler and the four exhausts at the rear with a modest diffuser in between. The car in these photos is finished in the beautiful color Alpina Grün II. In the cabin, the blue meters in the digital cockpit and the badge with the production number stand out.
