Why you can’t drive the GMC Hummer when it comes to the Netherlands

Europeans don’t want American cars, General Motors should know that by now. The company tried it several times with us, including Chevrolet and Cadillac, but each time came back with its tail between its legs. However, General Motors is stubborn and is just going to try again, with amazingly enough the electric GMC Hummer EV. Why? Because in the Netherlands you are not even allowed to drive in that colossus as a normal motorist.

“Europe is the second largest and fastest growing market for electric vehicles,” said a General Motors spokesperson last year, “so that offers opportunities.” The American manufacturer has started an EV offensive, including an electric Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Hummer EV. Both models don’t seem to stand a chance on the market with us, but according to the news agency Bloomberg GM will try anyway.

GMC Hummer EV is probably the heaviest car on the market

For example, the group would consider introducing the GMC Hummer EV in Europe. However, the huge pickup has one major problem: its weight. The Hummer is probably the heaviest passenger car on the market. He puts a ridiculous 4103 kg (!) in the shell. That’s partly because of its awe-inspiring size – it’s 5.5 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 2.0 meters high – but mainly because of its 200 kWh battery. For comparison: a Ford Mustang Mach-E comes to 98.7 kWh.

Hummer has 15,592 Nm of torque, GM says, but it isn’t

The Hummer EV is powered by three electric motors with a combined output of 1014 hp and 15,592 Nm. That sounds unbelievable and it kind of is. The torque specified by GM is in fact quite misleading. The manufacturer seems to give up torque at the wheel, while it is more common to give up torque at the engine. And if we calculate that, we arrive at approximately 1900 Nm of torque. That’s more realistic.

Can you drive a GMC Hummer EV with a driver’s license?

But suppose GM wants to market the Hummer EV in the Netherlands, then the company has a problem. You and I are not allowed to drive into the colossus. With its weight of 4103 kg, it falls into the category for which you need a truck driver’s license (C or C1). With a car driving license (B) you can only drive vehicles up to 3500 kg.
