Coupe SUVs ugly? Then take a look at this fantastically beautiful Peugeot 408

Okay, okay, let’s not sprinkle too much superlatives. We just can’t imagine that someone doesn’t like the new Peugeot 408. Because what a special creation the Peugeot designers have delivered!

What exactly is the Peugeot 408? The juggling starts with definitions in the press release. According to Peugeot, the 408 is a fastback, but there is also something to be said for calling it a crossover or coupé SUV. Anyway, the 408 is something different and also stunning, if we may be so bold.

New Peugeot 408 more aggressively styled

Peugeot is in any case busy with its design. The 208, 308, 508 and the three SUV models are recognizable, very attractive and also swim against the mainstream. With the 408 Peugeot builds on its existing designs, incorporating some familiar elements, such as the front ‘tusks’, the segmented grille and the pinched taillights.

Compared to, for example, the 308 and 3008, the new 408 has a more aggressive appearance, with an almost menacing front, high flanks, low side windows and a dynamic roofline. However, the name of the fastback/coupé SUV causes some confusion. Because according to Peugeot, we should see the 408 as a model between 308 and 3008.

Same platform as the 308, but much longer

It sits on the same platform as the 308, but is over 12 inches longer. Plus, it’s a little bit higher, with a slightly longer wheelbase. The bright blue car in the photos is probably the top-of-the-line model and it sits on remarkable 20-inch wheels. They seem to come off a concept car.

The dashboard comes one to one from the 308

The interior of the 408 is less surprising. There you will find the dashboard of the 308, with the now well-known i-Cockpit from Peugeot: the small steering wheel and the digital display above it. Given the sloping roof of the 408, we are very curious about the headroom in the back. The legroom will be fine. The trunk has room for 536 – 1611 liters of luggage. The battery of the plug-in hybrid consumes a few tens of liters.

Next year also electric Peugeot e-408

Because yes, the 408 will initially come on the market with the well-known engines of the 308. This means that you can choose from a 130 hp 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine and two plug-in hybrids: one with 180 hp and one with 225 horsepower. Both contain a 12.4 kWh battery, but the electric range has not yet been officially announced. An automatic transmission with eight gears is standard on every 408. Peugeot will also introduce the e-408 next year.
