How is it possible that there is still a McLaren P1 Spider after seven years?

The McLaren P1 was unveiled in 2013 and together with the Porsche 918 Spider and Ferrari LaFerrari formed the ‘holy trinity’ of the automotive world, the holy trinity. The hybrid hypercar went out of production in 2015, so why is there still – seven years later – a McLaren P1 Spider?

Between 2013 and 2015, McLaren built 375 P1s and 58 P1 GTRs. The latter are ‘circuit toys’: racing cars that do not comply with competition regulations, are not allowed on public roads and therefore only for track days are intended. It is reported that half of all P1 GTRs have now been made street legal by the British company Lanzante, including turn signals, a larger steering angle and hundreds of other minor adjustments.

McLaren P1 Spider commissioned by a wealthy customer

The McLaren P1 LM – another P1 variant developed by Lanzante – broke the road car record on Goodwood’s famous hill climb in 2016. This week Lanzante will once again be present at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this time with a P1 Spider. Why? Simply because a wealthy client wanted one.

Interior materials can now withstand water and UV light

The silver car in the photos was once delivered as a ‘standard’ P1. Lanzante has removed the roof, added reinforcements under the skin and diverted the cooling air for the engine and the turbos. There is a convertible roof, but you have to remove it yourself when the sun starts to shine and it can be stored in the car. Lanzante has thought of everything, because the interior has been re-lined with materials that are resistant to water and UV radiation.

Twin-turbo V8 in the back still delivers 916 hp

Mechanically everything remained the same. There is still a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 in the back, which produces 916 hp with the help of a hybrid system. The closed version of the P1 goes to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. It is not known whether the Spider has become much heavier. Lanzante also builds 5 of these. And they will undoubtedly all be sold.
