In March 2020, the speed limit on Dutch highways was reduced to 100 km/h during the day. You can only drive 130 km/h after seven o’clock in the evening. But the government now also wants to put an end to that. The reason? The coal-fired power stations are fired up again, so we have to compensate for those emissions.
Indirectly, the war in Ukraine is the reason for the cabinet plans. The idea is that the Netherlands must become less dependent on Russian gas, so that the four coal-fired power stations in our country can run at full power between now and the end of 2024. However, those emissions must be compensated, which is why additional environmental plans are being discussed the Telegraph
.There may be additional subsidies for companies that emit less CO2 and for better insulation of homes. The idea is also circulating in The Hague to lower the maximum speed on the highway to 100 km/h in the evening and at night. The measures will have to wait a while, because they are not immediately necessary. Due to the warm winter and high energy prices, emissions are relatively low this year.
