New, electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a driving retro banana

Well, retro… The Hyundai Ioniq 6 doesn’t have the futuristic seventies look of the Ioniq 5, but it does take over a few ‘old-fashioned’ styling cues, such as the pixelated lighting. Hyundai’s latest electric model has become a true design statement, with its extremely curved roofline and Porsche 911-esque rear wing.

The appearance of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is inspired by that of a 2020 study model, the Prophecy Concept EV. Hyundai calls the look of its latest electric car ‘Electrified Streamliner’. Let’s just not hope that all EVs start to look alike, because the silhouette of the Ioniq 6 is determined in the wind tunnel, as is that of the Mercedes EQE and EQS, which also have such a rounded roof arch.

Perhaps we should not be afraid of that, because as far as we are concerned, Hyundai has delivered a very distinctive model with the Ioniq 6: with a clean, minimalist front, a sporty-looking side profile and an exciting rear with a real wing. In that sense, the rear of the Ioniq 6 reminds us a bit of the rear of a Porsche 911. And you can definitely take that as a compliment.


Optional with small cameras as side mirrors

The Hyundai is extremely aerodynamic due to its optimized design. According to Mercedes, the EQS is the streamlined production car in the world, with a cW value of 0.20, the Ioniq 6 is just above that with 0.21. Hyundai has done everything it can to achieve that. The front of the Ioniq 6 is low, it is equipped with active air intakes, has optional cameras as side mirrors, a completely closed underside and that striking ducktail spoiler on the back.

Door panels without buttons for more space

The interior of the Ioniq 6 looks modern, but with a retro touch. As in the Ioniq 5, the driver has a large screen in front of him, which consists of a digital cockpit and an infotainment display. Both are 12 inches tall. As you can see from the pictures, the door panels are quite minimalistic, with no buttons on them. Hyundai has deliberately done this in order to create more interior space in width. The floor of the passenger compartment is completely flat.

Ioniq 6 will rely heavily on Ioniq 5 technology

Hyundai has not yet announced anything about the powertrain of the Ioniq 6. But we can be sure that the car will lean heavily on the Ioniq 5 in terms of subcutaneous engineering. It is now available with 170 hp or 210 hp and rear-wheel drive, or 305 hp and 4WD. The 170 hp version has a 58 kWh battery and a range of 384 kilometers. The other two contain a 73 kWh battery, with which a maximum of 481 kilometers can be achieved. The Ioniq 5 charges with a maximum of 220 kW.
