Road pricing in 2030 – Frequent drivers will pay 2.5 times as much tax

It seems more and more that we will finally start road pricing from 2030. In other words, as a motorist you no longer pay a fixed amount in motor vehicle tax every month, but you are charged per kilometre. And for people who drive a lot, that will cost a lot of money.

Road pricing is already on the agenda for 2030 in the coalition agreement, but soon – probably this week – the plans will become more concrete, reports the Telegraph based on Hague sources. The newspaper writes that there will be no rush hour charges and also no higher rate for the use of the highway. Motorists will simply pay for all kilometers driven. And that can add up a lot.

Frequent drivers will pay 2.5 times as much road tax

For example, the coalition has calculated that someone who drives 80 kilometers a day will pay 2.5 times as much road tax as now. Ouch! Someone who is only 20 kilometers a day in the car benefits from road pricing and pays about half the rate now. The problem for the cabinet is only: how are you going to register the kilometres? This can easily be done with a black box in the car, but that in turn causes problems with privacy legislation.
