Look closely, is a Volkswagen ID.4 driving here on the Nürburgring? You would think so, but it isn’t. The Volkswagen Group is trying to throw the sand in our eyes, because under the well-known ID.4 body lies the new electric Cupra Tavascan.
A Cupra Tabasco, what is that? The car is called Tavascan, named after a village in the Spanish region of Catalonia, and it debuted in concept form in 2019. Back then it had a power of 306 hp, a 77 kWh battery and a range of about 450 kilometers, which we will probably also see in the production version.
Under the skin, the Cupra Tavascan is an Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron / Skoda Enyaq Coupé iV / Volkswagen ID.5. We deliberately take the coupé models of the electric Volkswagen Group SUVs, because the Tavascan will also get such a sporty-looking body shape.
Cupra wants to become a global brand, it was recently announced. In Spain, the old sports label of Seat unveiled three models: the compact UrbanRebel, the Tavascan and the large Terramar. In the background Cupra gave us a quick glance at the facelifted Leon and Formentor, which get a similar front to the Tavascan and Terramar.
It is still not entirely clear what will happen to Seat in the future. The brand seems a bit left to its own devices. Seat has no electric models and will not get one, but will build a trio of compact EVs for Cupra, Skoda and Volkswagen. Why does Seat itself not have plug-in cars? The CEO has a very lame excuse for that.
