How well will the plug-in hybrid sell in the Netherlands in 2022?

The plug-in hybrid seems to be taking over the role of the diesel engine, many drivers are increasingly embracing it. Which models are popular and which are not? We look at the first months of 2022.

Plug-in hybrids can rid you of your last vestige of cold feet. You do have the advantages of electric driving, but you do not have to panic if all charging stations are occupied by charging station stickers or the fast charger does not charge quickly despite your haste.

Above all, they are a good alternative to the diesel engine, which is disappearing from Europe. If you charge well, you can drive particularly economically with a plug-in hybrid. Although the factory values are hardly achievable in practice.

Is the Netherlands a bit warm to the plug-in hybrid? Yes, we can say wholeheartedly. You can roughly say: the bigger the car, the more popular the plug. With the Renault Captur, a crossover from the B-segment, most buyers still go for petrol (43.8 percent) or ‘normal’ hybrid (41.1 percent). A plug is supplied with 13.7 percent of the Captures. A plug-in hybrid is therefore relatively expensive in this segment. A TCe 90 costs 26,600 euros, the E-Tech Plug-In Hybrid 160 already 35,290 euros.

In the compact middle class, the relative price difference becomes smaller. In the Peugeot 308 and 3008 and Opel Grandland, the share already fluctuates between 50 and 65 percent.

Land Rover Defender PHEV: almost 65,000 euros cheaper

In the higher segments you see the definitive turnaround: a plug-in hybrid is relatively cheap there. Take the Land Rover Defender. The P400e plug-in hybrid costs 84,325, while you pay no less than 149,026 euros for the cheapest petrol version without plug and with the same power (around 400 hp). Thanks to the P400e’s favorable CO2 emissions on paper. No wonder more than three quarters of Defender buyers go for the plug-in option. The Velar, Evoque and Discovery Sport are even sold almost exclusively as a plug-in hybrid.

Best-selling plug-in hybrid in the Netherlands and Belgium

But the plug-in hybrid also rumbles with SUVs in the middle class: 90 percent of Dutch Ford Kuga drivers – last year’s most popular PHEV in Europe – opt for this option. The EcoBoost version without a plug even disappears from the price list.

The Ford Kuga may be unbeatable in Europe, but in the Netherlands newcomer Lynk & Co 01 was the best-selling PHEV last year (and also in the first half of 2022). Belgium especially falls for BMW’s plug charms; the brand delivers no fewer than three models in the top five, with the BMW X5 PHEV as the bestseller.

Audi, Kia, not Hyundai

You see the same thing with Audi: the more luxurious the car, the bigger the bite that the plug-in hybrid takes out of the cake. With the A3 Sportback he comes to 15 percent, with the Q3 his share already rises to 40 percent. And so it goes, from 75 percent for the Q5 PHEV to percentages around 95 percent for the A8, Q7 and Q8.

The percentage is lower with the Volvo XC40, but it is also available with a fully electric drive. PHEV and BEV (all-electric) together account for 93 percent of the total. At Hyundai, the adage ‘the more expensive, the more plugs’ applies again. One in five Tucsons drove out of the showroom this year with a plug, with the larger Santa Fe it is 61 percent.

And with group mate Kia? The Sportage PHEV is slightly less popular than the Tucson in percentage terms, with 15 percent of the total. With the Niro, which is especially popular with us as a fully electric car, 10 percent opts for a plug-in hybrid.
