Rain was predicted and the drivers got it right at the start of qualifying. All drivers therefore wanted to get on track as quickly as possible to set a fast lap time. The conditions were very treacherous but gradually it rained a little less and the lap times went down.

Max Verstappen was fastest during Q1, followed by Charles Leclerc and George Russell. However, it was a constant leapfrog at the top, depending on how hard it was raining and how well the riders got the tires up to temperature.

In Q2 it was again Max Verstappen who was fastest, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. At the end of Q2 it started to rain much harder and no times were improved.

We had a super exciting qualifying in which everyone went straight to the top. Max Verstappen even went slightly over the limit and the Dutchman made a 360 degree spin. Spectacular but luckily without damage.

The track conditions gradually improved and the lap times dropped. With one minute left on the clock, Charles Leclerc went under the provisional pole time of Max Verstappen, but the Dutchman went even faster. However, both riders got one final final lap. Who would take the pole?

However, Verstappen and Leclerc did not improve in their ultimate attempt and it was Carlos Sainz who took pole position as the third dog. For Carlos Sainz it was the very first pole position of his F1 career. Max Verstappen will start next to him on the front row tomorrow, Charles Leclerc will start in third.
