First review Opel Astra Sports Tourer (2022): cool station wagon with plug

The new Opel Astra is now also available as a station wagon. We test the Opel Astra Sports Tourer with plug-in hybrid powertrain and take a close look at its trunk.


What stands out about the Opel Astra Sports Tourer (2022)?

You cannot order the Opel Astra Sports Tourer in yellow. The daring free paintwork of the Astra Hatchback (review) makes way for red in the station wagon. The metal paint of our blue test car costs 899 euros and the most expensive versions have a black roof.

Partly thanks to the blue color and the black roof, the Astra Sports Tourer looks cool. It is 26.8 centimeters longer than the 5-door Astra, but the proportions are fine. At the back we see the taillights of the hatchback, the name Astra written in letters and a low sill. The station wagon also has such a peculiar vertical third brake light.

What are the advantages of the Opel Astra station wagon?

The trunk has many tricks. Such as levers to fold down the three-piece backrest of the rear seat, after which a flat loading floor is created. With the 12V connection you can power a cool box or a vacuum cleaner and the rollable parcel shelf can be stored under the loading floor. The Ultimate version also has an electrically operated tailgate with foot sensor.

The luggage compartment volume is 598 to 1635 litres. That is almost identical to the 611 to 1642 liters of the Volkswagen Golf Variant. Their trunks are practically the same width and depth. With the plug-in hybrid Astra Sports Tourer you deliver about 90 liters (516 to 1554 liters). There is no plug variant of the Golf station wagon … 1-0 for Opel.

If you put the PHEV in electric mode, you don’t have to worry about activating the combustion engine unintentionally. The Astra continues to drive stubbornly on current and we like that. The smooth power gives a tasty foretaste of the fully electric Opel Astra Sports Tourer planned for 2023.

What are the downsides of the Astra Sports Tourer?

It sounds so handy: a parcel shelf that you can store under the loading floor, but there are a few snags on it. You have to remove two panels in the floor and that feels creaky. Moreover, putting it back is very precise. We suspect that not many Astra drivers bother with this. In addition, the PHEV may not have this storage. Under its loading floor, space is reserved for the charging cord. That storage compartment is so small that you have to roll up the cord absurdly neatly. And who takes the time for that?

The menu of the infotainment system does not excel in user-friendliness. For example, to switch off the active lane assistant, you have to press a very small icon and then click ‘Confirm’ again. That second click is annoying and unnecessary.

What is the price of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer (2022)?

The Business Edition is the cheapest version and has the comfortable AGR driver’s seat with extendable seat, heated seats in both front seats and a reversing camera. The plug-in hybrids also get adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. The Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid costs 40,149 euros. An Astra station wagon without a plug starts at 33,149 euros.

For 299 euros you can upgrade the on-board charger to 7.4 kW, so that charging only has to take 2 hours. Opel currently has a promotion where you get a free wallbox.

What do I think of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer (2022)?

This is my first introduction to the new Opel Astra. I particularly like the quiet cabin, the slim steering wheel with physical buttons and the balanced handling. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is powerful, quiet and economical. I like to recover power when rolling out and to drive as many kilometers as possible electrically. In comparison, the 130 hp three-cylinder drive is dull and noisy. The practical trunk with a large opening, flat loading floor and low sill will undoubtedly come in handy very often. If only the menu of the infotainment system was so accessible.
