TEST: Electric Cupra Born beats Polestar 2, but is also faster than good for him

The Polestar 2 Single Motor is slightly cheaper than the also electric Cupra Born with the 77 kWh battery pack. Nevertheless, the Chinese Swede is faster in the sales statistics than the Spaniard. Is that right? We compare the pair, starting on our test track. Which steers sharper and is better in the bend?

Create a new premium brand based on existing material, give it a sporty-sounding name and concentrate on (semi-)electric powertrains. Geely gave Volvo this shock therapy and that’s how Polestar was born.

Seat received a similar treatment, resulting in Cupra. The Polestar 2 is quite successful in the Netherlands. There are now about 6500 of these on the road. About 2000 units of the Cupra Born were sold, but they also came on the market later. The Spaniard is not doing badly at the moment. In the first half of 2022, approximately 650 Dutch people opted for a Cupra Born. This puts him close to his group brother, the Volkswagen ID.3 (approx. 750 in 2022). But the Polestar 2 beats them both, with about 900 transactions in 2022 so far.

Polestar 2 vs. Cupra Born on the test track

Will the Polestar 2 in the basic version (from €48,200) keep its lead over the Cupra Born 77 kWh (from €49,990) when we hit the test track? We set up the pylons, prepare the measuring equipment. And then: power on it!

With its fine steering and sporty Michelin Pilot Sport tires, the Cupra Born can be guided smoothly and precisely through the bends. The Spaniard’s slightly mobile buttocks make him swing as if he’s chosen the Spotify playlist of greatest salsa hits. We clocked a fastest lap time of a nice 1:45.0 minutes. This is not thanks to the electronics that keep track of the battery temperature. The power is soon reduced to prevent the batteries from overheating.

Polestar has better battery cooling than Cupra

When the Polestar 2 tries to keep up with the Cupra on the track, it’s like an overweight jogger who has to run against Usain Bolt. If you chase the Polestar, it will seek out the outside of the corner early on. This is partly because the car is on less sporty rubber than the Cupra. His best lap time: 1:48.2. Unlike the Cupra Born, the Polestar 2 simply maintains its full power throughout the track test. A question of efficient battery cooling.

Which brakes the best?

The brakes of the Born, on the other hand, do not suffer from overheating: after heating the discs and blocks, the car comes to a standstill from 100 km/h after 32.9 meters. For the same exercise, the Polestar needs 34.4 meters. During the slalom and turning circle test, the Cupra once again proved to be the most manoeuvrable of the duo. It achieves an average speed of 67.0 km/h and turns within 10.50 meters. The Polestar gets stuck at 65.9 km/h, respectively 12 meters.

Nice, of course, such a sporty handling, but how does the Cupra Born compare to the Polestar 2 when it comes to comfort, space and range? You can read the full test in Auto Review 7.
