George Russell: “If that works during the race I’ll be in shock”

George Russell was overjoyed yesterday at taking pole position for the Hungarian GP, his first Formula 1 pole position. However, Russell also realizes that he took everything out of the car during qualifying and he would be surprised if they can repeat that during the race.

Mercedes has usually outperformed qualifying this season in the race, so what can we expect in the race if Russell managed to take pole position yesterday?

“We take it day by day, we don’t want to get too carried away, we focus and take it one step at a time,” said Russell.

“We need to get off to a good start, have a good first stint, is it going to be a one, two or three pit stop strategy?”

“We know that relatively speaking we have a faster race car than a qualifying car. If that is also the case here, I would be in shock.”

“I think we did a perfect job in qualifying, absolutely 100 percent, getting every millisecond out of it.”
