Pirelli warns: “Adapted circuit of Spa-Francorchamps will be a challenge for F1 drivers”

The circuit of Spa-Francorchamps has undergone a thorough renovation in recent months. In addition to a new covered grandstand near Eau Rouge/Raidillon, various new asphalt layers and gravel trays were also installed. According to Pirelli, these will present the drivers with a major challenge.

The thorough renovation of the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps will cost about 80 million euros and the first major phase of this has now been completed. The new grandstand near Eau Rouge/Raidillon is particularly striking, as are the new gravel pits. In addition, the run-out strip near Eau Rouge/Raidillon has also been widened.

The various measures are intended to improve safety, but in its look ahead to the race weekend Pirelli warns the drivers that the renewed circuit will present a greater challenge.

“In addition to new asphalt in five corners, there are also new gravel boxes in four corners. They are much closer to the track,” said Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola.

“The drivers will have to pay a lot more attention to respecting the track limits and there is also a greater chance that sharp stones will end up on the track.”

“Spa’s epic characteristics remain unchanged with now additional challenges that make the circuit very exciting.”
