Belgian GP: qualifying: Max Verstappen fastest, Carlos Sainz takes pole

Max Verstappen set the fastest time during qualifying for the Belgian GP. However, due to a grid penalty, the Dutchman is not allowed to start the race from pole, which goes to Carlos Sainz, who set the second fastest time in his Ferrari.

Because the crash barriers on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit had to be repaired, qualifying for the Belgian GP started with 25 minutes delay. Once the light turned green, we soon had a lot of cars on the track.

Max Verstappen quickly showed that he was the man to beat, although he would not be able to start the race from pole anyway due to a grid penalty due to an engine change.

In Q2 we saw Charles Leclerc drive a messy lap in the Ferrari but moments later the Monegask went to the fastest time. Like Verstappen, Leclerc also receives a grid penalty, so the Monegask could also forget the pole position in advance. We had a very unpredictable battle for pole position.

During the first fast run in Q3, Max Verstappen drove a sublime lap, the Dutchman was the fastest by a large margin. Carlos Sainz had to settle for second in his Ferrari. At Leclerc, Ferrari made a mistake by giving him the wrong tires, in the end he was still good for fourth time.

In the end, hardly any times were improved during the second fast run and so Max Verstappen was the fastest in qualifying, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez. However, due to his grid penalty for an engine change, Max Verstappen has to start at the back and Carlos Sainz can start the race from pole.
