Lando Norris escapes grid penalty, McLaren fined

McLaren driver Lando Norris retains seventh on the grid but McLaren will be fined for an unsafe release during qualifying.

During qualifying, Lando Norris was sent out of the pit box into the pit lane by his team in Q1, right in front of AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese had to brake and George Russell who was behind Tsunoda also complained about the manoeuvre.

In the end, all drivers managed to push through to Q3, but the stewards did investigate the incident. In the end, they decided that Norris can keep his grid position but that McLaren will be fined €5,000.

“It’s what a surprise, we managed to qualify seventh, which was definitely better than expected,” said Norris.

“So I’m happy. A little mistake here and there, even on my last lap but nothing could have changed our position on the grid. So it was a good day.”
