Christian Horner regrets: “We missed an opportunity with Oscar Piastri, he could have driven for us”

Oscar Piastri has been dominating the headlines in Formula 1 for several weeks. The young racing talent decided to sideline Alpine for a race seat at McLaren. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has now also expressed his regret that Red Bull did not offer him a contract.

After titles in the Renault Eurocup, F3 and F2, Oscar Piastri was destined to advance to Formula 1. That will also happen next year and the Australian is clearly an ‘up-and-coming’ talent. Young talent that they would have liked to have included in the Red Bull Junior program.

“He drove for the Arden team (founded by Horner) in Formula 4 and Formula Renault and he was clearly a talent,” said Horner.

“There was an opportunity for Red Bull at the time, but we did not take that opportunity, I regret that.”

“What he has achieved since then has been phenomenal, in Formula 3 and Formula 2.”

In conversation with the ‘Beyond The Grid podcast’, Horner explains that if Piastri had been under contract with the Red Bull Junior program, he could not have just started working elsewhere.

“Had he been a driver with us, he would not have been out of contract for a period of time,” said Horner.
