“Surprising how Red Bull and Ferrari have exploited the new rules”

James Key, the technical director at McLaren, said he was surprised at how Red Bull and Ferrari were able to use the new rules to gain a competitive edge.

Red Bull and Ferrari do indeed have a reasonable lead over the competition, although the World Cup position may not show that very clearly as far as Ferrari is concerned. It was widely expected that the new rules and new cars would shake things up and bring them much closer together.

“I’m a bit surprised by how two teams have managed to find that extra bit of performance compared to all the other teams,” Key said in an interview on McLaren’s website.

“At the beginning of this season everything was closer together, but now everything is starting to fall apart. I have to say that Ferrari and Red Bull have done an excellent job of taking advantage of the new rules.”

According to Key, this is largely due to the historical facilities, knowledge and skills that some teams have amassed historically.

“It shows that as a large team with an extensive infrastructure and a lot of knowledge and a good methodology that have been developed over the years, you can achieve better results even within the budget ceiling.”

“You get a more level playing field in terms of budget, but in terms of where we come from that is not the case, it gives us a nice reference point to aim for.”
